Tory Manifesto Dishonesty Over Health And Safety

Cameron's HS dig 2010In much the same way as Thatcher buried her most unpopular plans, David Cameron has followed suit.

Knowing that even some major businesses are against his plans to decimate health and safety legislation in this country and create a free-for-all when it comes to employer's responsibility to their workforce, Cameron's manifesto remains completely silent about such plans.

In a document of 131 pages, the words 'health and safety' only appear on page 57 under the chapter dealing with the police! Under the paragraph headed 'Reforming the Police' the Tory manifesto simply states:

'amend the health and safety laws that stand in the way of common sense policing;'

Yet as has been reported on this website and in Trade Union media over the last few years, the Tory plans will mean total tragedy for the workers of this country.

In this weeks TUC Risks Mick Holder of the Hazards Campaign commented: "While there isn't anything positive for workplace health and safety activists in either the Labour or Tory manifestos, there is the worrying commitment to reduce regulation in the Tory one. Given the Tory's persistent and corrupt attacks on health and safety laws, including those in recent weeks, this must be an issue for those considering which way to vote in the forthcoming election."

The item also points out that the Liberal Party are not much better when it comes to honesty about health and safety. they only state that they will, "reduce the burden of unnecessary red tape by properly assessing the cost and effectiveness of regulations before and after they are introduced, using 'sunset clauses' to ensure the need for a regulation is regularly reviewed, and working towards the principle of 'one in, one out' for new rules."

As long ago as 2008, CWU's National Health & Safety Officer Dave Joyce was warning the readers of this website of the dangers of a future Tory government and their plans for health and safety.

"The Conservative Party have put themselves on the side of bad employers and have undermined the good employers who are happy to obey current legal minimum standards. The Tory Party Deregulation Plans as repulsive and although we do not get 100% of what we want from the current Labour government – the alternative is unimaginable for working people." , Dave said.

Both the NW BT Unions Health & Safety Co-ord and the CWU have been arguing for some time, the need for Union Safety Reps and all concerned with health and safety to highlight the Tory threat to the health, safety, and welfare of working people in the UK.
